Lyceum was a 19th century movement organized in the United States to provide town and village audiences with literary and scientific knowledge.  Founded in Millbury, Massachusetts in 1826 by Josiah Holbrook, the movement sponsored lectures, debates, concerts and publications.  Local community leaders, as well as known luminaries, were among the participants.  A forerunner of the Chautauqua, the Lyceum was named for the ancient Athenia gymnasium where Aristotle taught.

During the 1920's in Saint Petersburg, the Lyceum appeared with vibrant Lyceum Programs and grand artists series sponsored by the leading churches.  Under the auspices of dynamic pastors, the churches were eager to attract the ever-increasing number of tourists visiting the city.  Virtually, all of the nationally and internationally known citizens of the day visited Saint Petersburg.  The Lyceum programs continued, but on a lesser scale during the Great Depression and eventually passed into history.

We have brought back to life one of Saint Petersburg's finest historic properties.  The Lyceum, with it's structural grandeur and period ambiance, is among the most elegant meeting and special event venues in the country.  Just past the historic Carnegie Library and the original Saint Petersburg High School, our magnificent Mediterranean revival facility is located on the picturesque palm lined Mirror Lake.

You and your guests will step back in time as you enter the Lyceum.  The 20's style stained glass windows set the pace of the historic décor.  The rich gold, champagne, leather and silk green palette flows from room to room.  The period carpet, original oak hardwood floors and inlaid terrazzo accent the hand moulded ornamental plaster.  Chandeliers and original fixtures of plaster, crystal and alabaster ornament the Lyceum's Grand Hall with it's soaring 53' domed ceiling.

The Lyceum and its gracious staff provides the feeling of a time forgotten, with doormen and greeters welcoming your guests upon arrival and departure.  The smallest details are attended to.  Our beautifully decorated interior is the perfect backdrop for photo and video opportunities.  Family and friends will cherish these forever.   We strive to be flexible in meeting all of your event's special requirements.

Whether planning a social gala, private celebration, wedding ceremony and reception or a corporate function, the Lyceum staff looks forward to making your special event as grand and timeless as the Lyceum itself.
